Al Painter My Top Five Least Favorite Exercises

I recently worked out at a public gym for the first time in a long time, and it didn't take long for me to remember why I never go to one:
1) People doing things the wrong way.
2) Trainers "teaching" people to do things the wrong way.
3) The wrong exercises being done incorrectly.
There is a veritable cornucopia of catastrophic muscular massacres taking place at any public gym at any given time. From seated machine work to the "look at me" guy…

Al Painter Staying ready so you don't have to get ready: The key to 2012 event success

Even though we are only in November,  it is the perfect time to think about your 2012 outdoor event season. Now is when you get stronger so when its time to put that first number on your bike, back or the front of shirt, you're ready to go. This is the time of year when you work on staying ready, so you don't have to get ready.
This is when you work on more joint mobility, hip stability, strength, power and power endurance. The best way to do it is in 3-4 week blocks that are…

Al Painter Power Meters Don't Actually Measure Power: Part II

Our bodies are meant to be support structures which allow us to function. Functional training exercise programs are designed to maximize neuromuscular efficiency, or optimize the way muscles work together to move bones.

“Everyone needs power to move either in the athletic arena or in the real world, functional training will give you that power, “ says Juan Carlos Santana Med, CSCS in his book The Essence of Band and Pulley Training Companion Guide. “To optimally enhance…

Al Painter Give Your Exercise Program a K.I.S.S.

In the last few weeks, I've been reading a ton of exercise books. Fat loss, metabolic circuits, home exercise programs and how to administer a good old fashion muscular ass whoopen. To say I've been inspired doesn't quite do it justice.
The one thing most of these books had in common was an exercise routine needs a K.I.S.S. to make it work. Now normally, the only kissing during exercise I see is when people at INTEGRATE plant one on the floor after a hard…

Al Painter Low and Slow: The Fast Track to Muscle Imbalances

There seems to be quite a bit of interest in low intensity looooong duration base work vs higher intensity short duration. It is no secret I'm not a fan of long and slow. There are several reasons as to why, but the biggest one is how that accelerates the body breaking down faster, and here's why.
Most people have desk jobs. Those jobs shut down glutes and tighten muscles all over the musculoskeletal system by shear virtue of being in…

Al Painter Howdy IRideBicycles.com Community! My Name's Al, nice to meet you!

A couple of years ago,  I met one Michael Ploch through another cycling website where I'm the fitness editor. I interviewed him about his return from an illness and his insertion into the Cat 5 peloton in Tampa.

From there, we interacted constantly, talked a ton, and long story short, he's invited me to be a part of the IRideBicycles.com community as a resource for all of your training/fitness/etc questions.I'm looking forward to helping people ride longer and pedal…

Al Painter Do Power Meters Actually Measure Power? Maybe Not (Part I)

I bet that got your attention didn't it? Let's see. I'm brand new to the site. No one knows who I am, and here I am telling you power meters might not actually measure power.

Well, they don't, and here's why: your nervous system will only allow you to exhibit the amount of power that your joint stability allows. So they should actually be called "stability meters." They more stable your joints are, the more power you will put out. Paul Chek training guru says "you can't…

Tracy Foster Draper Reminder: Caution at RR Tracks!

A train isn't the most dangerous object when navigating your bike across RR tracks.  The tracks themselves can come up and bite your front wheel if you aren't careful!

A quick note of caution when approaching RR tracks: Hit them head on, even if that means to swing out a bit.  Give audible cue and / or hand signal those around you and hit the tracks at a 90 degree angle.  Two folks I know went down just this…
